Barbell Plate Loading: Bar Weight and the Symmetry Rule

The basic idea behind plate loading

A barbell's total weight comes from the bar itself plus the plates loaded on both sides. Plates always need to be loaded symmetrically, with equal weight on each side, for safe and balanced lifting -- that symmetry assumption is the starting point for every plate-loading calculation.

Bar weight: the Olympic barbell standard

The internationally standardized men's Olympic bar weighs 20 kg (44 lb), and the women's version weighs 15 kg (33 lb). Generic, non-Olympic bars found in many commercial gyms vary more in weight, so it's worth confirming the actual bar's weight rather than assuming 20 kg by default.

Working out the per-side plate weight

The weight needed per side equals (total weight - bar weight) / 2. Aiming for a 100 kg total with a 20 kg bar, for example, gives (100 - 20) / 2 = 40 kg of plates needed on each side. If your gym uses competition collars, remember they weigh 2.5 kg each — add 5 kg to the bar weight before dividing, or your per-side figure will be off by exactly 2.5 kg.

Standard kg plate combinations

A typical kg plate set includes 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5, and 1.25 kg plates. Building 40 kg per side can be done several ways -- two plates as 25 + 15, or two plates as 20 + 20, among other combinations.

Standard lb plates and a well-known benchmark

A typical lb plate set includes 45, 35, 25, 10, 5, and 2.5 lb plates. Loading a 45 lb bar with two 45 lb plates per side (four plates total) gives 45 + 2 x (45 + 45) = 225 lb -- the weight behind the well-known "two plates" bench press benchmark.

Common mistakes in plate calculations

Frequent errors include forgetting to double the per-side weight when converting it back to a total, or the reverse: treating (total minus bar weight) as the per-side figure without dividing by 2. Mixing kg and lb plates on the same bar is another common source of unit confusion. When the target does not divide evenly into available plates, round DOWN to the nearest loadable weight rather than up: a slightly lighter bar keeps the planned rep scheme intact, while an unplanned heavier load changes the session.
